Weekend in Customers #14

Updated: Mar 26, 2019

Working at Munchers Bakery in Lawrence, Kansas, I see a lot of interesting people: travelers, regulars, families, friends, strange folk. When I get the chance I try to ask them two questions: "How was your morning?" and "What are you doing today?" Here were some of my favorite customers from the weekend of March 10:

PS: This weekend and next weekend will be short because I’m on an Alternative Break in Lexington, Ky.

The Vet: She was wearing scrubs, heading to her work as a veterinarian. I asked her what was her least favorite animal to take care of. “Chihuahuas,” she said. “They’re all mean.” The Cyclone Dad: The man beamed, eyes lighting up with pride as he spoke. He was driving to Iowa State University to see his son’s senior night basketball game. His son’s one request was Munchers donuts. The New Driver: I asked the mom and daughter what they were doing later. Her teenage daughter rolled her eyes. “I’m going to drivers ed,” she said.

The Story-Book Proposal: The woman was getting married in a year and she wanted her cake made at Munchers. Her graphic designer fiancé had proposed by drawing her a personalized comic book strip.

The Wildcat: Kansas Jayhawks hat, Kentucky Wildcats shirt. He went to the University of Kentucky for his undergraduate education, but he works in Lawrence. "I've adjusted," he said.

The Health Nut’s Husband: It had been four years since the man had been to Munchers. The same amount of time he and his wife had been together. She eats really healthy and he can never get her to eat sweets. Today, he planned to bring home some donuts in hopes of luring her to Munchers.
